This book is a fascinating pictorial account of the history of Ayrshire's county town. The first part of the book includes a detailed historical sketch of the burgh over the centuries, including information on industry, education, religion, health, commerce and recreation. The remainder of the book is made up of numerous illustrations old and new, representing the history of the town over the years. Each one is accompanied by a sizeable caption that gives a concise history of the illustration. Here one can find information on a whole host of subjects, including the old buildings in and around Ayr, such as St John's Tower, Loudoun Hall, Newark Castle, etc, former mills on the River Ayr, country houses in the parish, some long gone, old churches, hotels, Ayr Churchill Barracks, monuments and memorials, schools and factories, etc. etc. etc. The book also includes information on a number of lesser known or obscure aspects of the history of the town, such as the town drummer, lifeboats, trams, racecourses, lemonade factory, fire stations, and football teams.
