The fifty years’ struggle endured by the Covenanters from 1638-1688 is a much misunderstood period. The Covenanters fought for, and ultimately won, religious freedom, keeping Kirk and State separate from each other. During that time, however, thousands suffered persecution, banishment and death for their religious beliefs, and all over southern Scotland are places associated with the Covenanters. This book is the most comprehensive guide to the period published, and is a readily accessible reference work which lists all the main Covenanting sites, as well as hundreds of little-known ones. The main players on both sides are detailed, as well as some of the terminology used at the time. The encyclopaedia has extensive appendices listing those who suffered, from banished men and women to those who paid the ultimate prices, either on the public gallows or shot in the fields. Also included are details of eleven tours that can be followed round some of the more important locations.
